<![CDATA[News from Ricardo Bofill, Taller de Arquitectura]]> http://www.bofill.com en-en <![CDATA[Bofill believes that Beijing will be a success]]> In an interview published today by the magazine ""Unica"", Ricardo Bofill,
the Spanish architect, said that Beijing over the last few years was turning
into a ""Hollywood for architecture"". Terra Actualidad - EFE
During a recent visit to the construction site for the tourist project, which is being built on the island of Porto Santo, the archipelago of Madeira, Bofill said that the ""star system"" of the architects could be found in the capital of China, where the professionals there were showing themselves to be the most prestigious.

The architect believes that Beijing is the city which has changed the fastest throughout its history, and that it would create the same enthusiasm that we had towards Hollywood.

Bofill indicated that for his work he needed ""humanistic disciplines"" and ""speciality techniques"". He continued by saying that working with a Nippon philosopher helped him to understand the society of the Asian country, without which, working there would be very complicated.

He was awarded the prize for best architecture and urban integration in 1998, by the Lisbon Town Hall for the Atrium Saldanha building.

Bofill believes that it is the Mediterranean cities which have the best planning. ""They combine functions and social classes, where life in the street is more active. He confirms that it is essential to a city that it has its streets full of life, without which, it would merely be a suburb massed with people.

The Spanish architect''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s project in Porto Santo has an investment of 125 million euros, and includes a hotel, a casino, 193 apartments and 12 villas on the edge of a nine kilometre beach.

<![CDATA[Bofill confirms that the work on the Villa Cultural de Prado is progressing at a good pace.]]> The architect did not want to comment on completion dates, although everything
is pointed to it being for 2007.
It was announced today that work on the Villa Cultural de Prado, which will house the headquarters for the Symphonic Orchestra of Castilla and Leon, the High School for Drama, the Professional music conservatory and the Dance School, was making good progress. Ricardo Bofill, the architect of this complex said that the building is going to be unique, and that once it is completed the building will be a nice surprise. Bofill, accompanied by Silvia Clemente, the Councillor for Culture, and Francisco Javier Alvarez Guisasola of Education, visited the site today, which is now
three-quarters completed. Both Councillors commented on the complexity of such a project which combines culture and education all in the same place.

The architect did not want to give any clues regarding a completion date, although it is ear-marked for completion by the beginning of 2007. He went on to say that everything was now geared towards completing the building and getting it up and running. Bofill always likes to take some time once a project has been completed to oversee everything, and make sure that everything functions as it should.
He said ""you can not imagine how it will be, but that it will be a very pleasant surprise for all"". He assured us that the headquarters of the Symphonic Orchestra of Castilla and Leon (OSCYL), would have a high quality and special acoustic for each one of the music halls.

Regarding the design, Bofill emphasized the functional character of the building, saying it would be an emblematic building as it is not surrounded by other buildings which would condition the form of its construction, for which reason it is built very freely, designed to fit its functions, very minimalist, simple and pure.
He continued by saying ""it is a unique project, there will never be another like it as it cannot be duplicated"".

Alvarez Guisasola assured us that the opening of the complex would be as soon as everything was ready and working. Bofill finished by thanking the Junta of Castilla and Leon, saying that no-one, not even the politicians would dare to undertake a construction of such characteristics.
The building is situated between the ""Huerta del Rey ""district and ""Parquesol"" district. It has an estimated budget of 36 million euros. The Villa Cultural de Prado is an education centre, consisting of three individually designed buildings boasting independent entrances although the three are intercommunicated. This architectonic complex will house not only the OSCYL auditorium with seating for 2,200, and the camera music auditorium with seating for around 490, but also the headquarters for the Professional Music Conservatory, the Superior School for Drama Art and the Dancing High School. It will cover an area of 32,000 square metres and will be around 18 metres high.

<![CDATA[Patience and resistance, perfect ingredients for working in China]]> Ricardo Bofill, the most international of Catalan architects, is also in China. His long international experience, coupled with the fact that he runs one of the biggest architectural offices in Spain, makes him the best candidate to enter into the Chinese market. In fact, his first experience was back in 1993, well before the avalanche of information that we receive nowadays from the Asiatic giant. The project that was signed was for a city in the Nan Sha port, in the south of the country, with a population of 700.000. After a pause of a decade, Bofill has returned to China, and has done so in full force over the last three years. He has over ten projects in construction inBeijing, amongst which there is a luxury residentialcomplex, a hotel in the fashionable area and a city dedicated to biotechnology.

<![CDATA[The hotel Vela, work of Bofill, finally begins to get underway in the new mouth of the port.]]> • Work to lay the foundations of this polemic building has begun after
seven years of negotiations
• ETheTown Hall demanded changes to be made to reduce the height of
the building to 88 metres, and the State wanted the building moving
back 20 metres from the coastline.

The developers of this unique and polemic hotel, in the shape of an open sail blowing in the wind, planned to be built by Ricardo Bofill have finally started work on the first stages of the towers'''''''''''''''' foundations after seven long and troubled years. The building will be 88 metres high, and not that of the originally planned 160 metres. The height has been reduced due to strong opposition from the Town Hall saying that 160 metres high would spoil the visual harmony of the seafront façade of the city.

The removal and compacting of the earth will be carried out by the temporary uniting of FCC Construction, Comsa, Sacresa and Obrascon Huarte Lain, to whom the APB in September 2003 awarded the concession of the construction and exploitation of the complex , after in May the APD had to declare the open bidding as a failure, and started a process of negotiations.

A Multi-million Investment.
The project not only includes the hotel, but also an adjacent triangular building intended for offices, services and an underground car park with a capacity for 900 vehicles. The forecasted investment being 157 million euros.
After resolving the discrepancies which emerged from the Town Hall, the building has had to be adapted due to the new state port laws. These laws require that all constructions on the coastline are at a minimum of no less than 20 metres from the seafront. The release of this space has not affected the architectonic configuration, but has reduced its size somewhat, making the project more compact.

Allegations.
The special plan for which construction is permitted for the new river mouth project comprises of a surface area of 130.000 square metres of which 90.000 is buildable area with 42,000 assigned for the hotel, 25,500 for the office block and 4,500 for recreational installations. The allegations presented by the Town Hall regarding the project, forced the promoters to modify their initial plan.
Work on the project begins to become reality almost seven years after Bofill presented his plan for it on 13 July, 1999. He had the support of APB, Pere Macias the adviser for public works and Jordi Pujol, who was the President of the Generalitat at the time. The initial idea received that very day criticism of the vice mayor, Xavier Casas, who described the hotel as too overwhelming.

But our idea is to explore the Paris of today, with views on a Christmas getaway, and for this obliges me to mention the new Costes, that is really called costes k, and it is found in the Kleber avenue (hence the k added to the original name) just by Trocadero and who is fully designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura.
Even being inaugurated in 1993 it is now when it really looks hot. The Hotel itself is the anthisesis of the concepts of luxury and interior design: architecture flows into interior design: clean lines, generous spaces, and absolutely natural light and green multiply here the sensation of a great SPACE, sober but highly detailed and comfortable. The metals and noble materials, the modern works of art, and brand furniture by Bofill is highly relaxing, a cool counterpart to the binome steel-glass used as structure for this delightful contemporary palace.

<![CDATA[International Hub for South Europe: Barcelona, Terminal sur]]> The New Prat Terminal Sur will be the principal Hub for all South Europe.
Star Alliance bets for Barcelona as the principal Hub for South Europe.
Between Heaven and Earth, Terminal South becomes the Gates of Catalunya, a spectacular new Barcelona Airport at the Prat by the world famous architect and his Taller de Arquitectura, now is a Terminal that interests the biggest airline network in the world, Star Alliance, from where to offer an integral service to connect the flights from the different airlines and create an Inter-modal transportation (hub) that demonstrates the international vision and vocation of Catalunya and Barcelona as a globalized city.

The international alliance of airlines Star Alliance has presented this morning in Barcelona its plan of expansion for the new South Terminal, which is planned to be inaugurated in 2009. This plan would make Barcelona the principal place of inter-connexion in South Europe, which would mean having direct flights between Barcelona and the main cities in Eastern Europe, like Budapest, Bucharest, Moscow, or Saint Petersburg; the Middle East, like Kuwait, Dubai, Riad; North Africa, like Casablanca, Tripoli, Algiers, Abu Dabi: or Asia, like Istanbul, Bangkok or Singapur.

The hub is a place or inter-connexion between planes, high-speed trains, other trains, underground, taxis, cars, cargo, etc. This airport is the world pioneer for this typology, which later Beijing has used for its own Terminals for the Olympics 2008.

The new South Terminal of the Barcelona airport, signed by Ricardo Bofill, y starting to get into shape after having to solve some technical difficulties.

“The presence of water has obligate us to build a wall 7 kilometres long and 22 meters deep around the entire perimeter” explains Josep Canet, engineer of the AENA Plan, the group that supervises the job.

Another problem has been the instability of the delta terrain “that we have solved with sand dunes 8 meters high that we have been moving over the land to make it compact” he confirms.

25 million users
The south Terminal will serve more than 25 million passengers a year but it is not clear when it will be functioning for the public.

South Terminal, “will be four times bigger than the existing terminals”, alone capable of absorbing 25 million passengers per year with peaks of 8.500 users per hour.

The news infrastructure is formed by 3 parts clearly differentiated. The central building or processor of users where check-in, baggage claim, and a retail area: the central docking area of 654 meters long and 36 wide, for the passengers; and the great inter modal hall where different transportation systems flow.

It will also have more than 10 thousand covered parking spaces and 2 thousand at grade, 40 bus station-spaces and 150 taxi at exit position. The project is costing more than a thousand million euros.

<![CDATA[Ricardo Bofill is designing a new tower complex in Moscow]]> The famous Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, born in Barcelona in 1939, is designing a new tower complex to be constructed in the next two or three years in Welton Park, in the north east of the Russian capital.

The project, estimated around 150 million dollars, has a central element 35 to 40 floors height that becomes the landmark in the pedestrian area of Welton Park, says Alexey Dobashin, director of the real estate developers Krost who already signed the letter of agreement with Bofill.

It is the second time Bofill tries to do a project in Moscow. In the 80s he was unable to do it because of the unstable investor climate but now it seems that the obstacles are part of the past.

A few days ago, Bofill gave in the Russian capital a master class in the international framework of IM Events, dedicated to global architecture tendencies and real estate development.

<![CDATA[Newsletter. Happy New Year 2007 from Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura. News, new projects, new web, new landmarks. New operating strategies. ]]> This year 2006 Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura has been working on projects all over the world, from south to north, west to east, creating from sustainable social housing in Dakar, Senegal, to luxury properties in Beijing, China.
Bofill is creating symbols in places where cities are often broken and without meaning, dealing with complex mix-use projects of urban scale, architecture harmony, ecological and energy saving systems, engineering and technology transfer, special water-saving gardens, often full or total designs of “new centralities”, “new towns”, or projects as ambitious as the new capital of a country like Algeria.

The Bofill brand makes landmarks by providing “a story”, the plot, the title, the concept, and the architecture details that will lead to excellence in construction. An example is “The Gates of Beijing”, the Upper East entrance symbol to all visitors and citizens arriving or departing the Olympic city. The two tuscan red “tectonic twin towers” elevate 100 meters into the sky united at the base by a transparent space.

In 2006 Ricardo Bofill has continued to globalize by actively and in-depth cooperating with local public institutes and/or private architect and engineering companies, forming teams to design and build landmark projects.

The Taller teams have tackled in 2006 some complex construction problems, as for example the one million square meters Barcelona Terminal Sur, a Hub built on the waters of a delta, with a 7 kilometer 20 meter deep wall all around it to make the Terminal “float”, an industrial cathedral like-space of crystal, metal and stone, and a skylight with a roof that moves with its own special spatial geometry.

Another complex Bofill project in Barcelona is the W hotel; sail imagery captures the shape reminding a boat at sea, by the Mediterranean, a public building with a public plaza conceived as the ending of the beach on the port, and a balcony over the sea, together with a marina and parking facilities. Under construction also, is the Villa Nacional del Prado, Valladolid, due to inaugurate on Febuary 15, 2007.
The Villa is the biggest cultural centre in Europe that will bring great cultural activity to Valladolid and its region, with dance schools and music conservatories for all types of music, dance, theatre, film and multimedia, all new activities for this vast modern “academy of culture”.

With projects for new cities in countries all over the world, Bofill is dealing with vast planning for territories in la Costa Esmeralda, to new social cities in Venezuela, to the most-fashionable shopping centre in Kawasaki, Japan, to the most expensive luxury loft in 5th Avenue, NYC, Taller de Arquitectura has worked with the most professional architects, engineers, developers, investors and public authorities in the world.

Bofill is designing from new mix-use buildings in the historic center of Saint Petersburg and new towns in Ucraine, to complex project landmarks in the north east of Moscow.

Ricardo Bofill is proud of its network and know-how to execute visionary ideas for territories, cityscapes, gardens, avenues, corners… For us, Architecture is SPACE, a place with a name and a sense of harmony, a language and a style of writing.

<![CDATA[Ricardo Bofill wants to restore the enhancement of the river Moldava which flows through Prague]]> The Catalan urban designer and architect Ricardo Bofill announced in Prague his participation in several urban projects in the VIII district of the Czech capital, where he intends to build an emblematic area that would emphasize the leading role of the river Moldava which flows through this city of central Europe.
“The cities that really exist are either by the sea, or are crossed by rivers. If not, they simply do not exist” the world-wide famous architect from Barcelona explained today while presenting his project Corso II in the former industrial quarter of Karlin, adjacent to the river Moldava.

According to Bofill’s opinion this affluent of the Elba “must become the city’s spinal column within 20 or 30 years”.

The major of Prague, Josef Nosek, has planned the regeneration and transformation of the industrial zone with different housing projects and office buildings as well as retail and leisure space together with the collaboration of international investors. “I like industry. I like chimneys mixed with high buildings” pointed out Bofill who lives and works in a rehabilitated old cement factory.

For Ricardo Bofill it is also important “to have the historic memory of Karlin’s past industrial features that emerge in his office buildings”

The Project Corso II includes 47.00 square meters of office space, between the Vitkov hill and the river, with a first phase of 14.000 square meters with an investment of 17.5 million euros that will be inaugurated in 2008.

<![CDATA[The Kings of Spain will inaugurate a “city of culture” by the master architect Ricardo Bofill, named Centro Cultural Miguel Delibes, in Valladolid, Spain.]]> The Kings of Spain will formally inaugurate next June in Valladolid the Centro Cultural Miguel Delibes, a “city of culture”, grand in size, the biggest in Europe of this type, 54.000 square meters designed for the thinking, rehearsing, planning and playing of the traditional and avant-garde arts.
This iconic, modern and spacious city for culture could be compared to other landmarks that have changed the dynamics of cities and regions. Here the curved presence is frozen into the waves on the roof that undulate like the abstract planes of Valladolid.

The place is theatrical. The entrance sequence takes you around a sculptural, 180 meter long red wall and through a sliding glass wall into a classical yet ultra-modern entrance hall that lead into a series of primary functions: theatres, auditoriums, all wooden concert halls for chamber music, a large open–space room for experimental theatre, a music conservatory, a dance and a drama schools, as well as all their auxiliary and technical functions. A magical place for an inspirational education and performance of the highest arts.

In the next days the Symphony Orchestra will fine-tune the all wooden Auditorium, a place studied with one the most renowned acoustician in the world, Mr Yaying Xu, “a very special flexible sound” said Ricardo Bofill. The Auditorium has a capacity for 1.800 spectators.

The structure of this “small city of arts”, as Bofill called it, is based on three differentiated parts corresponding to 1) the Professional Music Conservatory and a Chamber Music Room, 2) the Auditorium and the Symphony Orchestra hall, and 3) the class rooms an rehearsing rooms of the Drama High School, the Professional Dance School and the Experimental Theatre, with six hundred seats.
These three parts assemble around a large covered but open central space, conceived as a plaza and meeting point for “all citizens users of this city of culture” that will be open throughout the year, with a maximum capacity of 1000 people.

Bofill adds: “It is the lowest price by square meter in the world for a cultural centre of these characteristics. My team and myself think in terms austere concepts of space and light, advanced technology and materials, sustainable buildings and landscapes, high-energy saving. Yet the final cost is low. We have been working in adapting design systems to the contemporary challenges for 45 years. We have the experience.
This has been a great honor to participate with this very special team in this very special project” said the architect.

<![CDATA[A house for music]]> During the ceremony that opened the House for Music, Theatre and Dance, the Consejo de Castilla y Leon named “Miguel Delibes” Ricardo Bofill´s new building, grand as the great Spanish writer himself. The symphony hall with a capacity for 1,700 people, is one of the biggest concert halls in Spain. Besides, there is chamber music room with 500 seats and a theatre accommodating 600.
In 2001 the team Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura won the competition for the project under the motto “Waves”, with reference to sound waves suggested by the undulating steel roofs that shape the building and define its logotype.

The building, wrapped in a glass walls, absorbs the red colour of its structure in harmony with the ochre shades of the Plaza Mayor of Valladolid and reflects the colours of the surrounding meseta landscape.

<![CDATA[Opening ceremony Abertis headquarters, Interview with Master Ricardo Bofill, architect]]> A: How would you describe this project?
RB: The Abertis building is a part of a whole new edge-landscape, three buildings with a continuous façade to the Ronda Litoral, form an interior plaza that conforms a patio protected from the highway.

A: Why is the interior plaza red?

RB: The interior world is soft, contrasting with the double glass wall. In the patio we recover the elements of Mediterranean and Catalan architecture as the stucco, in red, in this particular case, we used a technique developed in the Arabic countries, famous tac-lac.

A: ¿You combine construction technologies?

RB: We always learn something new, for each project we develop and use a specific methodology. Our aim is to create an architectural design appropriate for every particular space, place, function, client, technology. This is our work, to design and build the best project possible within a cost-effective operation.

A: Cost-effective?

RB: Yes, there is a strong tendency to reduce price and quality.

A: You mean that your clients have more benefits?

RB: Yes, of course, ask some of them, for example, Dior, Cartier, Rochas, Shiseido, Parisbas, Swift, JP Morgan, AXA and Chateau Lafitte Rothschild: all these companies have multiplied the final value of their buildings.

A: Because of the brand-name Ricardo Bofill?

RB: Evidently, Bofill is an architectural brand known world-wide.

A: Let’s go back to Abertis headquarters and its façade…

RB: The double skin façade was proposed some years ago, and has been used in many projects. Even though it was inspired, only ideally, in the great Egyptian or Medieval historical walls, the double glass façade has in common with these walls the element of thickness, acting as container, as barrier. We don’t find these components in the single glass walls.

The double skin was used in several buildings that we have built, in the 1992 Airport for Barcelona. The double skin façade has been approved as an important energy saving, acoustic and thermic isolation feature.

A: In the case of Abertis headquarters you have chosen the glass-angles…

RB: Our starting point was the strong presence of the traffic on the highway, the edge-condition. The approach here was different to my previous projects in the Parc Logistic.

In this new phase three buildings conform an angled façade towards the highway, a dynamic, solid and transparent façade, in an attempt to capture the paradoxes of a new urban landscape.

A: Tell us about the distribution

RB: It is an optimized ground plan; with a feature, a central greek-cross shape open space. This space allows access from the lobby to the flexible working zones.

A: Is this ground plan comparable to the one of your Chicago tower by the river?

RB: Yes, it has some elements in common, the efficiency ratios exist from the beginning, these are the relationship between the gross and the usable space is the efficiency ratio, the result of studies on economical and architectural functionality for a building.

Architecture needs to incorporate all parameters.

<![CDATA[Karlín's Corso IIa Opening!]]>
The office floor space of 13 000 m2 shelters a communication core with four elevators and two stairways, a variable dimensional arrangement for an open space, showrooms on the street level, a restaurant, a supervised three-level car park with a capacity for 140 cars, a satellite and own TV antenna . The convenient situation of the building close to the city center guarantees its future tenants easy access to services, civic amenities, traffic connections and public transport routes.

The author-architect of the project, Ricardo Bofill and his studio Taller de Arquitectura, have cooperated with Real Estate Karlin Group on the revitalization of Palác Karlín and the development of Corso Karlín. Bofill alone is enthusiastic about Karlín. „Whichever city I work in, I endeavour to keep its Genius Loci. Industrial manufacturing draws away from cities – and cities undergo changes and restructuring. Karlín fascinates me mostly by its industrial architecture. Industrial districts are places which possess a specific memory. That memory has to be preserved,“ conveys the author of the structures – among other including
Congress Center in Saint Petersburg, Hotel Vela in Barcelona, South Terminal of the Barcelona Airport, residential projects on New York's 5th Avenue and many other.
According to REKG leader Serge Borenstein, a good architect is the solid prerequisite for a successful project:
„There are encounters that may have influence you for the rest of your life. For me, such a fatal moment was my first acquaintance with Prague, the city which I started to love and I where I found a new home; another moment of the same feeling came across was when I met Ricardo Bofill. It is not quite usual to have the developer's and architect's visions become so concerted and interwoven like ours. And I think it is quite visible in the projects we have already completed together.”

Corso IIa recorded its first success in having been nominated for the Best of Realty Award in the office buildings category.
The development of the next stage – CORSO IIb – shall be launched in the wake of the present success, that is by the end of this year.]]>
<![CDATA[El Prat lands in the World]]>
Bofill has created a new model and a new typology: an intermodal or airside hub where passengers transport between metro, train, private car, private transport and planes, works optimal and efficiently. Future airports are already based on this model as the only and unquestionable reference. Barcelona is once again at the avant-garde of technology, architecture and design. Once more Bofill has demonstrated that he is one of the best architects in the world.

The glass façade is ready to be wiped clean, but granite floor is shining. Luggage belts at check-in counters are working while the escalators covered with black cloth cannot yet be used. The new South Terminal of Barcelona Airport is almost completed.

The civil work will be concluded end of November. Then the trial period will start. AENA will undertake more tan 200 global trials with 6,000 extras to test out its functioning. Everything must be ready for the opening. AENA assures that the infrastructure will be operating between March and October 2009.

Improving 9th position

When the new South Terminal of Barcelona Airport starts operating, airlines will move gradually. The airport will serve 55 million passengers per year – compared to current 33 million – and 90 operations per hour – versus current 64. The gate to the city will be larger.

“Rated number 9, with the South Terminal we expect to climb the list now led by Heathrow”, says Carlos Echegaray, director of Barcelona’s Airport. The new terminal’s size equals 82 football stadiums, and is 4 times bigger than the sum of the existing ones.

The new satellite building of 200,000 sqm will include arrival and departure piers, waiting and retail areas, and the hall of the station for the automated people-mover.

The project includes the construction of boarding bridges and service and evacuation passages.

The house of Bernarda Alba will be the first play by Lorca performed at the National Theatre of Catalonia

With leading actresses Nuria Espert and Rosa María Sarda, the play directed by Lluis Pasqual will be presented next April 29th at the 400-seat Experimental Hall of the Theatre, designed by Ricardo Bofill, as per the first Director of the National Theatre of Catalonia, Jose Maria Flotats’ special request.
In 1997 Bofill and Flotats envisaged the dream of a nation with its own cultural heritage, to found a public theatre that became a successful model worldwide.
TNC follows the architectonic tradition of the Greek Theatre. The building combines two classic archetypes, the temple and the theatre. It includes 3 halls: the Experimental Hall, or magic box, with a fourth wall that becomes part of the show; in a separate wing the Hall called Workshop, reserved to the scenery set construction and other activities and the 900-seat wood Classical Hall, perfectly classical, inspired in Palladio’s theatres of Vincenza.

The performance of this key play in Federico García Lorca’s repertoire shows the avant-garde trends of Barcelona today.

Ricardo Bofill architectural firm has designed a new green Terminal for Barcelona’s airport, with sustainable and maximum energy efficiency criteria. The new Terminal T1 with a capacity of 30 millions passengers per year will be inaugurated this summer. In contrast to present airport terminals, the new building’s main feature is light. As explained Albert Cassart, engineer at Plan Barcelona “the glass walls flood natural light into the building that will be utilized throughout the public spaces generating a soft and controlled lighting that clearly results in energy saving”. Energy saving is also the reason for the installation of 800 solar panels in Bofill’s project.

<![CDATA[All Europeans airports will envy the new T-1 terminal of El Prat Barcelona Airport according to Star Alliance]]>
In his opinion, the new Barcelona terminal exceeds in many aspects the T-4 of Madrid Barajas airport, which is very beautiful, but less practical and efficient than Barcelona T1. The new terminal has the structure of an exceptional hub, only comparable to the newest airports in Asia.

The sword-shaped T-1-designed by Ricardo Bofill has a total area of 525,000 square meters, equivalent to 850 football fields. With a passenger capacity of 55 million per year the new terminal will allow to handle 90 operations per hour.

<![CDATA[The Bartolomeo Project for Dnepropetrovsk Approved]]>
The project was forcefully presented by Ricardo E. Bofill. The Council session was held at the head office of the Dnepropetrovsk City Hall’s Department of Architecture and Planning on December 19 2008 and aroused much interest in the city. Attending the session were all the members of the Urban Planning Council as well as numerous architects, journalists, municipal civil servants and professors and students of architecture.

Discussion of the project was emotionally charged by virtue of the privileged nature of the site as the culminating point of the historical Karl Marx thoroughfare. Chief Architect Julia Sayenko, Honorary Architect and the city’s former Chief Architect Viacheslav Vnukov, as well as other members of the Council all stressed the qualities of the project. The Catalan architect worked in cooperation with the Ukrainian architect Vadim Kozlov, who acted as the local architect.

This is the second project by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura to have been approved by a municipal Urban Planning Council in Ukraine – the first, dated December 2007, was for Kiev – and one of the very few projects by foreign architects approved in Ukraine.

<![CDATA[New Barcelona Airport T1]]> Political and business Catalonia yesterday came along to the opening of T-1, the new terminal at Barcelona airport. Some 700 political and business leaders were invited and heard speeches in the following order from the terminal’s architect, Ricardo Bofill; the Minister of Public Works, José Blanco; the President of Catalonia, José Montilla; and finally the Prime Minister of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

All the speakers agreed that it was a festive day. Mr Zapatero praised the functional and aesthetic aspects of a facility which “has a futurist, functional and Mediterranean air to it” and is characterised by its “clarity, minimalism and simplicity". Ricardo Bofill explained that “there is no room for the ornate or superfluous” in his design.
The event was also attended by the architecture director at Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, Peter Hodgkinson; the interior designer at the RBTA, Marta de Villalonga; architect Ricardo E. Bofill; economist Pablo Bofill; the chairman of Banco Sabadell, Josep Oliu; the owner of Marsans and ex-chairman of Spanair, Gonzalo Pascual; the new chairman of Spanair, Ferran Soriano; the chairman of Abertis, Salvador Alemany; the chairman of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Miquel Valls; the chairman of Mango, Isak Andic; the chairman of Vueling, Josep Piqué; the CEO of Agrolimen, Artur Carulla; and the chairman of Acciona, José Manuel Entrecanales.

The curved and sleek terminal, which was designed by Ricardo Bofill, a native of Barcelona, reflects the latest in airport trends. Its environmentally friendly features include solar-powered water heaters and glass walls that let in plenty of daylight and views of the city. And its resort-like amenities — spa, fitness center, hair salon, multi-faith church, beds and, of course, some 80 stores and restaurants — suggest a world of long layovers and delayed flights.

Among the 19 airlines now based in T1 are US Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Spainair. They will soon be joined by American Airlines, Iberia and Vueling.

<![CDATA[The architect Ricardo Bofill receives award De Sica in Italy]]>
These awards are given since 1975 to outstanding personalities from the arts, science and society, originally focused on the film world, they were initiated at the International Cinema Meetings in Sorrento.

In this category were awarded the Italian actors Claudio Bisio, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Luca Argentero, Antonio Albanese, Massimo Boldi, Ilaria Occhini and Jasmine Trinca, producers and directors Bini Alfredo Neri Parenti, Marco Pontecorvo, son of the legendary Gillo Pontecorvo.

Ricardo Bofill was awarded in the category of architecture, for his outstanding international career spanning more than 5 decades, while the prize for musicians went to the tenor Andrea Bocelli, the price for painting was for the Italian Enzo Cucchi and in dance, for the Russian dancer Maja Plisetskaya.

Also were awarded the writer Dacia Maraini (Literature), the actor, singer and composer Moni Ovadia (theatre) and the oncologist and ex health Italian minister Umberto Veronesi (science).

The jury also awarded the Italian-American television presenter Mike Bongiorno, died last September 8th, whose family received the award given to those kind of personalities.

In an interview with EFE, Ricardo Bofill said that this award is special for him, not only because of his passion for Italy but also because of the person who gave it to him. "I do not personally go to all the awards they give me, only those I like, and this one, given to me by President Napolitano, who now is an example of honesty and courage, is very special for me" Bofill said after the ceremony, and added that he and the head of Italian State have a relationship of "friendship" "for a long time." In fact, the Spanish architect had a word with Napolitano while accepting the award, where they remembered old times, Bofill said.

Bofill, whose mother was Italian and learned to speak this language as a child, confessed he is a fan of Italy, where he has built buildings in different cities like Florence, Bologna and Salerno, and also fan of their way of being, "very Mediterranean" , as in Catalonia, adding that residents of both territories are "cousins”.

The Spanish architect revealed that it is currently carrying out a project precisely in Salerno (southern Italy), and another nearby Naples, but did not specify what type of building concerned.]]>
<![CDATA[The architect Ricardo E. Bofil was the star of the Eurocities Forum]]>
Son and grandson of architects, his father founded in 1963 the Taller de Arquitectura, where Ricardo E. Bofill is the vice president. The day before, Ricardo E. Bofill visited Miss Meroño’s house, president of the Homeowners Association of La Paz, to transmit confidence to the neighbours and assure them that the works will begin in 2010. "After five years it is time to finish the legal paperwork and start building. We are just looking for people to live better," said Bofill, who excused the absence of his father and mentor. "My father is in Russia” said the architect, whose curriculum is a succession of degrees from universities such as Columbia, Rice, Harvard and UCLA. “Today Russia is a country more advanced than Europe in economic and social housing projects. There, in Russia, we met the same problem that we have in La Paz but multiplied by thousand."

La Paz project, designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, is developed by José Lopez Rejas. The proposal consists on the demolition of the 1.502 social units of 45 square meters and the construction of 3,000 new homes -1502 reserved for the present owners-in 64 buildings of five to 24 floors, plus new underground parking, streets, plazas, schools, kindergarten, parks and community areas. Fourteen hectares of area in the centre of town, which, as Bofill reminded the Eurocities Forum members, drags serious problems of social exclusion.

"We are going to provide a new property to the owners of the existing neighbours he insisted, re-connect the area with new streets, with new urban spaces and new facades. We want to integrate the public space into the city, and without the total support of the neighbours, this would be impossible, that is why we say that here in La Paz there is a great deal of relocation and dialogue. Now is the time to fix the problem because the neighbours are very frustrated. "

<![CDATA[United challenges Lufthansa and creates a giant of the air]]>
The biggest aviation company in the world has chosen the most prestigious address in the CBD – 77 Wacker Drive – to locate its headquarters. This skyscraper in the Loop, which has won more awards than any other in the modern history of Chicago, was built by the legendary developer Mike Reschke, the most famous American client of the architect Ricardo Bofill. The two are linked by a 25-year professional relationship that has led to the two of them making landmarks in Chicago, such as the JP Morgan building.

At 204 metres high and with 51 floors, this granite and glass tower has even been mentioned by President Obama, who referred to 77 as the most beautiful modern tower block in his city. With 90% efficiency and profitability that has beaten many records, its elegance based on gravitas and an eternal classicism more vertical than ever, despite its medium height, has captivated everyone with its proportions, its materials, its famous marble entrance halls and its wooden lifts.

The tower block and the office of the chief executive of the new company, Jeff Smisek, have been the location for many films, such as "The Negotiator" and “Batman, The Dark Night". Jeff Smisek will perhaps be the next Batman. Born 55 years ago, he occupied the same position at Continental. His opposite number at United, Glenn Tilton, will take on the non-executive presidency. With the distribution of powers under which one company (United) is maintaining its commercial name while the other is keeping its top management, the airlines insist that this is a merger between equals.

United shareholders will control 55% of the new company and investors in Continental 45%, with an exchange of equity. The operation, which was attempted before, unsuccessfully, in 2008 and which is now valued at 3,170 million dollars (2,403 million euros) has been led by the man who will be the highest ranking executive at the new company, Smisek. He phoned Tilton after finding out in the American press that United was holding merger negotiations with another airline (US Airways). “My best potential partner was walking off with someone else and I advised him to switch and go for the pretty girl," explained Smisek yesterday.

The operation, with which the two companies are seeking to gain size outside their own country and to protect themselves against low-cost domestic competitors, will create a firm with a joint turnover of 29,000 million dollars (21,800 million euros; Lufthansa's turnover was 22,280 million euros in 2009) and capitalization of 6,800 million dollars. This is the second big concentration movement in the United States in the airline sector, following the merger between Delta and Northwest in 2008, and on a par with the merger between Iberia and British Airways in Europe, a process that will be completed at the end of this year. The American companies expect to achieve annual synergies of 1,200 million from 2013, even though there is no duplication between their routes and that yesterday they pledged that job cuts will be minimal. The two – like Lufthansa members of the Star Alliance – have 88,000 workers.

<![CDATA[Ricardo Bofill designs the new headquarters for Desigual, the Catalan fashion brand. ]]>
The new headquarters for Desigual will be built next to the W Barcelona hotel, a glass office building facing the Mediterranean Sea.

The building is conceived as an urban morphology inspired by the Barceloneta area, with narrow streets that lead into a shady interior plaza.

The triangular shaped ground floor connects with the lines of both the Paseo de Borbon and the Paseo Maritimo starting at the Forum, and the Rosa dels Vents square on the West, a green and mineral plaza that emerges to confront the sea horizon, a spectacular contribution by Bofill to the new Barcelona urban design.

Desigual 120 people design team will move to the new quarters. They will share the space with the rest of the company’s departments.

With a staff of over 2,000, this year Desigual plans to increase the number of stores in the world to 180.

The 11,000 sqm project will be completed in 2012.

<![CDATA[Ricardo Bofill designs the "sober and simple" library Vaclav Havel in Prague]]>
The building, called "The house next to the Drahomira’s column" it’s Baroque style, although all architectural styles from the Renaissance had left their mark.

"We have transformed the building and kept the architecture, with an attitude of respect for the details, all architectural elements and materials," said Bofill.

Its central location in Loreto Square and within walking distance of the St. Vito Cathedral in Prague Castle, makes it a privileged place.

Documents, letters, and other writings of the ex president of Czechoslovakia which cover a period of 50 years in the history of this Central European country, will be available to researchers and historians.

"As soon as the files processing work finishes, the Library will do more than that. I wanted the library to be more like a club rather than the headquarters of a political party. I want it to be a spiritual, cultural and political haven," said Havel.

The ex president will move his headquarters and the office of some nonprofit organizations to the building.

The building will also house Zdenek Bakala Foundation, which bears the name of a coal magnate and great patron of this project, budgeted at 8 million euros (11 million dollars), which opening is scheduled in two years.

Bofill's earlier works in the Czech capital are on the other side of the Moldava River, in the industrial district of Karlin, where he has now another office project underway.

"It is a factory reconstruction. A project for Mr. Bakala that will become the headquarters of the publishing house Ekonomia," said the architect.

<![CDATA[Preservationists highlight Ricardo Bofill's dedication to Prague's industrial heritage]]>
Some of old industrial complexes have been rebuilt to serve other purposes, such as galleries or offices, while others have been completely demolished.

Heritage protectors have been gathering documentations on such buildings for six years that they would like to use for their protection now, MfD writes.

Industrial buildings are spread all over the city since Prague used to be the country's industrial centre for some 150 years. However, its face considerably changed in this respect in the past decade when factories had to give way to housing development, the paper writes.

Developers are often eager to buy such industrial complexes, especially if they are situated around the city centre, but not with the intention to renovate them for new purposes. They simply want to pull them down completely and build new residential houses instead, MfD writes "This is why we have created a background documentation for their possible protection," said Michaela Ryskova, from the National Heritage Institute in Ostrava, north Moravia, which has much experience with the reconstruction of abandoned industrial facilities.

Now experts must sum up the collected data on "industrial heritage" in Prague and other towns and submit it to the Culture Ministry that is in charge of the lists of protected real estate, MfD notes.

There are simple criteria for entering an industrial building into this prestigious list: it must be unique in one or more aspects, for instance, thanks to its technological solutions, architectonic elements or importance, the paper adds.

It mentions several examples of successful and less successful reconstructions of old factories.

In 2003-2008, architect Ivan Kroupa turned a complex of industrial buildings from the 19th century in Holesovice district into the DOX Contemporary Art Centre with spacious exhibition halls. The centre does not hide its minimalist modern appearance behind a historical facade.

Another successful reconstruction is also a private project. Architect Josef Pleskot was returned an old family factory from 1884, producing water meters, in the restitution process in the 1990s and he built up a gallery and office of his architectonic studio there, while preserving the "old industrial beauty" of the former factory to the maximal extent.

The abandoned CKD production hall in Prague-Karlin was recently restored by famous architects Ricardo Bofill and Jean Pierre Carniaux into an administrative building connecting historical and modern elements.

"In my opinion, the most amazing project is the establishment of the MeetFactory by (artist) David Cerny, which corresponds to current trends in Western Europe," Eva Dvorakova, from the Prague Heritage Institute, told the paper.

The three-storey former railway building at the end of the Smichov station was dilapidated for years until 2007 when Cerny along with other artists opened a culture centre there which abounds in rough but authentic atmosphere, MfD writes.

On the other hand, some projects in Prague have failed from the architectonic viewpoint, for instance, the residential complex built instead of the old Vinohrady brewery, founded in 1895, a part of which burnt down in 2000.

At present, the Zizkov goods station has a great potential as it is in a quite good shape, architect Zdenek Lukes pointed out.

"However, I fear that they will pull it down," he added.

The former station is threatened with developers' ambitious plans to create a whole new residential district at this place, MfD says.]]>
<![CDATA[Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill visits St. Petersburg city to monitor project]]>
Bofill, or “Maestro” as he was referred to at a press conference organized in honor of his visit to the city, has designed more than 1,000 projects for more than 50 countries and owns the Taller de Architectura workshop in Barcelona. Together with his team of architects, Bofill has created Barcelona Airport and the National Theater of Catalonia, the head offices of Cartier and Christian Dior in Paris, the Shiseido Building in Tokyo and the Dearborn Center in Chicago, the latter two of which are both skyscrapers.

Although St. Petersburg was designed with the participation of many foreign architects, nowadays it is rare to find an architect from abroad working in the city. The primary reason for this lies in the architectural standstill that took place in the second half of the 90s, a period in which all buildings and apartments were designed to essentially look the same.

Another reason for the lack of foreign architectural projects in St. Petersburg, analysts say, is that it is difficult for foreign architects to adapt their projects to Russian standards — in particular, safety standards — which drastically differ from those in Europe. Therefore, the work done by Bofill — a Spanish post-modernist architect — and developed by RBI Holding looks set to stand out in St. Petersburg.

“It was both an honor and a challenge for me at the same time to receive an offer to create a project in the historical part of St. Petersburg,” said Bofill. “St. Petersburg is a unique city that for 300 years has been developed according to a single plan. It’s really lucky for us to be able to design a complex right in the center of this area.”

Despite the project’s central location on Novgorodskaya Ulitsa between the Alexander Nevsky Monastery and Smolny Cathedral, the neighboring buildings are not so appealing: The red-brick Document Center complex on one side, and a few non-functioning industrial enterprises adorned with numerous pipes on the other. A distant view of Smolny Cathedral can however be caught from some of the apartment windows.

“We adapted our project a bit to match the architectural style of the surrounding buildings,” said Bofill. “Our philosophy is that if a site isn’t yet at the same level as that of our architectural structure, it’s up to us to bring it up to par. We have to create a turning point for the future development of the area so that the whole historical center can reach its architectural potential.”

“We expect that in ten years this area will be fully transformed,” added Eduard Tiktinsky, president of the developer company RBI. According to Tiktinsky, 30 percent of the apartments have already been sold, along with 20 percent of the business space.

The finished complex, which is currently 70 percent complete, will consist of an apartment building and a business center, and is described by Tiktinsky as being of neoclassical style with between nine and 12 stories, brightly colored and with columns decorating the central facade.

“The complex combines different styles of the past and present, and it is a vivid example of modern classicism,” said Bofill. “It matches St. Petersburg’s atmosphere and its citizens, who are self-confident, ambitious, pragmatic and romantic at the same time.”

“I have a lot of experience and don’t need to do something too bold in order to prove myself. It is more important for me to understand the city. I don’t want to create something that won’t blend in,” he added. “We don’t like luxurious architecture — we like it to be elegant and sophisticated. Every building has to be a piece of art, but with a human face.”

<![CDATA[The project “Oceanic”, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill]]>
The project “Oceanic”, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, was presented to the Mayor of Valencia, Rita Barberá. Both the Mayor and Unibail-Rodamco directors declared that the project was fantastic news for the city and it proved that Valencia “has again been chosen by the largest international investment companies”, and have ventured that the mall will become a “new architectural landmark”.

According to Spain General Manager Unibail-Rodamco, Simon Orchard, “Oceanic”, will be built on a 77,800 sqm site included in the partial plan “Fuente San Luis”, next to the intersection of the V-31 and the V-30 highways at the city South entrance. Construction should start in 2013 and be completed during the second semester of 2015.

The privileged location of the site will contribute to enhance the building’s visibility and provide easy access both for the citizens of Valencia and the visitors arriving by public or private transport.

The design by Bofill, intends to become the city’s new architectural landmark; 97,000 sqm distributed over three floors with 200 international brand stores and 4,500 free parking lots.

Orchard announced that the company will invest 265 millions de euros. Apart from the indirect investment by future operating companies additional 60 millions euros will be spent in access and infrastructures included in the urbanization project approved by the Municipality.

According to Unibail-Rodamco the investment will create around 2,500 direct new jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs during construction works. The company has 77 shopping malls worldwide, 15 in Spain.

Simon Orchard announced that “Oceanic” will include a special feature that will attract “around 12 million visitors per year”.

The Mayor has applauded this initiative that should contribute to the dynamization of the city’s economy in this crisis situation, and will create new jobs and generate additional revenue for Valencia, a “city that doesn’t stop and continues on the right track”.

She has defined the project as “serious, professional and innovating” with the beauty of Ricardo Bofill’s architecture as an important added value”.

The architect has stressed the “functionality and personality” of this new mall, a retail complex “with low long volumetry” where the Mediterranean light and the local orange trees, as the Mayor expected, will be play the leading role.
